Golden Bowl
Heraia (Arcadia)? c. 2,200 BCE
17 cm ~ Gold
This exceptional piece, possibly a libation vase of hammered gold sheet, is intriguing because of its purported provenance, the Peloponnesus. The comparison to other terra-cotta vases of analogous shape discovered in the Cyclades, at Troy, and in continental Greece would seem to imply a Cycladic origin. The unknown artist seems to have produced the definitive bowl through unerring pure craftsmanship.
