Golden Helmet
Arcadia (Heraia)? c. 2,200 BCE
17 cm ~ Gold

This exceptional piece, possibly a memorial helmet of hammered gold sheet to commemorate a military victory, is intriguing because of its purported provenance, the Peloponnesus. The comparison to other helmets of analogous shape discovered in the Cyclades, at Troy, and in continental Greece would seem to imply a Cycladic origin. The unknown artist seems to have produced the definitive helmet through unerring pure craftsmanship.
